Guidelines & Policies

Fables will only review work specifically submitted for review. We're willing to look at a variety of formats, electronic and print, and accept review copies from publishers or authors.

Anyone interested in writing freelance reviews can contact me with a list of preferred genres and formats, previous reviewing experience, etc. As books are submitted I'll contact potential reviewers to see who is available/inclined to review the book. (Declining to review a book, for whatever reason, won't get anyone kicked off the list of potential reviewers.)

If reviewers are published authors, they won't be asked to review books released by their publishers. Potential reviewers should feel free to decline to review material based on this or any other perceived conflict.

Given former personnel overlap between M3iP and Silver Lake Publishing, books published by SLP will not be reviewed by Fables. Books by SLP authors which are available from another publisher will still be eligible for review. Work by Fables and M3iP staff will not be reviewed.

Fables sells advertising space. There is no expectation that publishers or authors who submit a work for review will purchase advertising space, and should they choose to do so it will in no way affect the tenor or publication date of the review.

Fables won't publish reviews that simply trash a book. This doesn't mean that the reviewer needs to lie about his or her reaction to the book; but if a work lacks redeeming qualities, he or she should decline to review it on that basis.

Fables does not currently offer payment for work published in the Commentary section, though reviewers obviously receive a free copy of the work they review.

The Commentary section isn't just for book reviews. If you're interested in reviewing (or having reviewed) another type of work, conducting an interview, et cetera, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me.
