The Lost Tapestry

By Anastasia Andersen

Revenge runs wild through the leaves
and fearful men await the sound--
the heavy pewter of the hooves

of unicorns. The echo weaves
itself into a savage wind.
Revenge runs wild through the leaves.

The maidens hide but moonlight gives
no shelter, and their veils fall to the ground.
The unicorns with tarnished hooves

have sent the huntsmen to their graves
and scattered all the loyal hounds.
Revenge runs wild through the leaves

and unicorns reclaim the groves.
A red, like wine, has darkly stained
the heavy pewter of their hooves.

A ghostly morning light reveals
what tapestries have not explained--
revenge ran wild through the leaves
with heavy pewter on its hooves.
